EN | Today's post has been written by Meritxell Gacimartín, founder and chief editor of VOYEUR DESIGN, as guest post for this new master class of ChicDecó Decor School. Meritxell has a very broaded expirience in interior design and today she will be giving us an interesting master class on lighting. Thank you Meritxell for your king collaboration with this blog.

Light is one of the most powerful elements of interior design. It can infuse the simplest space with richness and depth. It can be manipulated to dim and brighten, obscure and highlight, create plays of shadow and even color. Yet light is often the one element that is overlooked, usually the aspect of design that is forgotten when we are planning a new interior scheme and it should be considered first. Here are some tips to have in mind before designing the lighting scene.

1. A well balanced lighting scheme is made up of three key lighting types: flattering general light, task lighting that performs a functional purpose and spotlight used to display objects.
2. Light is a powerful tool we can use to influence our mood. By controlling the elements of feature lighting and general lighting separately, different moods can be created, for example, one for early evening drinks, another for after-dinner coffee.
3. Highlighting unites a space by providing a sense of focus. With the background dimmed, our eyes are naturally focused to the brightest visual element. The contrast between dim and bright light is essential when creating atmosphere.
4. Nor should we forget the warm, flickering glow of firelight on a winter’s evening, or the magical, shimmering style of candlelight, both as tools for creating atmosphere in our living spaces.
5. Use of patterns with light. Pattern is not only introduced through fabric and wallpaper, light too. Any perforated material when lit from behind or within, will decorate nearby surfaces with pattern. Pattern is also achieved with a successively of light spots repeated on a surface or pathway.
6. Colored light. Inspiration for color is all around us, why not using it with artificial light? Color adds flavor to life and richness to our surroundings.
7. When designing an outdoor space and garden, it's worth considering at the outset how light can extend its scope. Special effects in your outdoor scene are called for a touch of theatre and light can take center stage.
